ILLUSTRATION BY PAUL REVERE? [WEST, BENJAMIN.] Bickerstaff's Boston Almanack . . . 1772. Portrait of William Pitt on the title, full-page engraved illustration of the Wonderful Man Fish. 40 pages. 8vo, stitched self-wrappers; some staining and browning. Boston: John Fleeming, [1771]

Additional Details

A wonderful illustration of a cross between a man and a fish, holding a stiff snake in his right hand, supposedly captured at Oreford in England. The portrait of Pitt on the title appears to be after Paul Revere's illustration which appeared the same year on a broadside printed by Edes & Gill. Indeed, it is possible that the illustration is by Revere himself, as there are unidentified charges to "Mein & Fleming" in Revere's day book. See Brigham, page 71 and 139-40. Drake 3210; Evans 12281.
